Abstract
This module seeks to develop the understanding of the complexities of food security and nutrition (FSN) policy within the broader context of agricultural and economic development.
The aim of the module is to:
• Introduce students to FSN and FSN policy
• Introduce the concept of FSN at the global and regional level
• Develop an understanding of the concept and interrelated causes of food insecurity and malnutrition (production, markets and socio-economic, health and sanitation context and institutional environment) and the role of gender
• Develop an understanding of food systems and their transformation to ensure affordable and health diets in the context of African development
• Understand household coping strategies and response to risk and shocks
• Develop an understanding of the impact of the macro economy on household dynamics (including livelihoods, purchasing behaviour and nutrition)
• Equip students with practical tools for programme and policy analysis and targeting
• Provide an understanding of possible programme and policy options and identification of the tools to evaluate their effectiveness in terms of achieving comprehensive and pro-poor growth.
